Ear, nose and throat specialist Jesse Ryan, MD, describes how jaw reconstructions are accomplished in patients who have lost a portion of their jaw due to injury or cancer. Surgery involves removing a piece of non-weight-bearing bone from the patient's leg and fashioning it to be used in the jaw. The procedure is called "microvascular free tissue transfer." Ryan is an assistant professor of otolaryngology with expertise in jaw reconstruction.
